Since its technification in the 1970s, new knowledge and technologies are constantly being added to the farm routine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The technification of pig farming started in Europe in the 1970s (SESTI, L.A.C.; SOBESTIANSKY, 1998), through intensification of the activity by adopting management that sought efficiency in terms of producing more quantity (kg of meat) with fewer resources (space, time, labor, feed, etc.).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Obtaining an excellent productivity with continuous improvements and identifying the limiting causes for these indices to be reached became fundamental for producers and technicians linked to pig farming. Thus, indices such as feed conversion ratio (FC), daily weight gain (DWG), carcass yield (CR), absence of diseases and low mortality in all phases of production have always been considered critical in modern pig farming.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In these phases it is desired that the pig gains the maximum weight in the shortest possible time, consuming the minimum amount of feed (MORÉS; AMARAL, 2001). Accelerated weight gain means achieving slaughter weight in the shortest possible time and, in this way, the producer achieves a return on his investment in the shortest possible time (VOS; DEWEY; FRIENDSHIP, 2000).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, quantity is no longer the only factor to consider. The quality of the meat and the way the animals are reared (and fed) became decisive factors for consumers when choosing a product in the market. All this within the legal framework of each country, which in many cases limits or prohibits the use of practices\u002Fproducts that could be considered unethical.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>MEAT\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The consumer considers the following as indicators of pork quality: appearance, color, smell, taste, tenderness, amount of fat, etc.\u003Cbr>Pigs accumulate fat under the skin in the dorsal region. This deposition expressed in millimeters of thickness is a criterion to differentiate carcasses as lean or fatty. The market demands leaner carcasses with less back fat. To achieve this, Ractopamine, a β-adrenergic that reverses the rate of fat and muscle deposition in pigs close to slaughter, was used for a long time, resulting in less fat deposition at this stage and greater availability of nutrients for muscle formation. However, the use of this molecule is currently banned in the European market and the industry is looking for alternatives to its use.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>CHOLINE METABOLITES\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Choline is commonly supplemented in monogastric diets because it is an essential component of the cell membrane phospholipids (BATTAGLIA; SCHIMMEL, 1997), participates in liver metabolism by preventing fat accumulation in the carcass (BEST et al., 1932), is a precursor of acetylcholine (DALE; DUDLEY 1929) and is essential for a balanced and functional methylation cycle. A properly functioning methylation cycle processes methionine through adenylation to S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), which is the methyl donor in more than 50 different reactions, including DNA methylation, creatine synthesis and Phosphatidylcholine synthesis (BERTOLO; MCBREAIRTY, 2013).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The methylation cycle also provides a source of phospholipids for use in membrane structures, as well as lipoproteins important for fat (energy) metabolism. Choline not only provides the choline moiety for phospholipid and lipoprotein synthesis, but also assists in the regeneration of methionine, thus saving methionine for protein synthesis. As such, choline supplementation ultimately supports the optimal functioning of fat and protein metabolism.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The suggested minimum level of choline in pig diets is around 300mg\u002Fkg, but there are conditions of raw material, animal life stage, digestion and metabolization that justify its use, or that of its secondary metabolites, at higher densities (RAVINDRAN et al., 2016).\u003Cbr>When choline is ingested, it is metabolized to phosphatidylcholine, the molecule responsible for choline’s known effects. Phosphatidylcholine also plays an emulsifying role and activates cell receptors to mobilize fat.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It has been shown in research that&nbsp;\u003Cstrong>Natu-B4®\u003C\u002Fstrong>&nbsp;is more effective than choline chloride in achieving levels of phosphatidylcholine capable of performing the functions attributed to choline. One of the reasons for&nbsp;\u003Cstrong>Natu-B4®\u003C\u002Fstrong>‘s ability to completely replace the presence of choline chloride, and at much lower doses, is that its phospholipid constituents (Phosphatidylcholine and other phytoactive phospholipid conjugates) bind to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), primarily liver PPARα (Figure 1).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>PPARα are nuclear receptors that are related to the production of the hormone adiponectin in a directly proportional manner, i.e. the more PPARα receptor activation, the more adiponectin production. Adiponectin is an adipokine protein involved in several metabolic functions, such as lipid and glucose metabolism, glucose utilization and lipogenesis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To be activated, this adiponectin must bind to AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 receptors, expressed in insulin-sensitive tissues such as skeletal muscle, liver, pancreas and adipose tissue, where it increases AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK) activity, promoting fatty acid oxidation and the entry of glucose into tissues.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In addition, adiponectin has a direct effect on the regulation of metabolic pathways in the liver, optimizing nutrient utilization and weight gain. The use of natural choline in poultry and pig diets has become more common in markets with high production efficiency and that operate under considerable pressure for cost reduction, such as Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Chile, among others. However, its concentration and bioavailability in these sources can be very variable. For this reason, and in order to guarantee adequate levels to cover the production needs of the different species, feed formulators provide the choline supplementation through the traditional source, choline chloride.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Choline chloride is chemically synthetized through the reaction between trimethylamine (synthetized from the methanol and ammonium), hydrochloric acid and ethylene oxide. Its cost in formulation is relatively low in comparison with other vitamins. The TMA is then absorbed and can affect negatively the hepatic metabolism of the birds and is also known to give a fishy smell to the eggs;\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Its concentration is low (in general, 60% for the powder and 75% for the liquid), which requires a higher inclusion rate and thus occupies more space in the formula;\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Choline chloride provides some chloride, which should be taken into account in the electrolyte balance; for example, the excess of chlorine in the diets is associated with metabolic acidosis, which predisposes the broilers to metabolic diseases such as tibial dyschondroplasia (already in the initial stages) and ascitic syndrome;\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Hygroscopicity and corrosivity – in addition to being unstable and difficult to handle during feed production, choline chloride can increase humidity and cause destruction of vitamins in the premixes and the feeds.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The natural choline supplement, BioCholine®, is a carefully controlled mixture of different plants well known in Ayurvedic medicine. The product is in powder form, which is thermostable and non-hygroscopic. It can be used in premixes and in pelletized or extruded feeds.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The plants comprising BioCholine® provide choline in the form of phosphatidylcholine and other phospholipids, inositol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine, important molecules for general metabolism. The experimental trials and the use of natural choline in the field over the last several years, in conventional production in Latin America and Europe, have proven that the product can totally substitute the choline chloride without any reduction in performance. BioCholine® can also improve performance with varying substitution ratios, due to the mode of action of the phosphatidylcholine and the synergistic interaction with the active components of the mix of plants. The recommended level of inclusion is between 1\u002F4 and 1\u002F5 of the dosage of choline chloride.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Phosphatidylcholine, one of the active components of natural choline, acts as an agonist (promoter) of the PPARα (Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptors Alpha), proteic nuclear receptors acting on transcription processes. This means that, during the animal’s growth in intensive production systems, the liver is potentially exposed to sustaining the damage caused by a wide variety of harmful substances, deriving from both the different metabolic processes (e.g. reactive oxygen species), and other external ones external to the organism itself (xenobiotic).2,3 As a result, under these conditions, the liver activity can be a limiting productivity factor. In this regard, the use of a hepatoprotective additive will prevent this activity from diminishing, significantly improving yield.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Under these premises, there are two basic goals for using a hepatoprotective additive in the animals’ diet:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Improving the integrity and regeneration of hepatocytes, optimising the liver’s ability to detoxify, enabling it to better counteract the harmful effects of mycotoxins, heavy metals, pesticides, antibiotics and other substances, as promoters of chemical growth, on the animals’ health and on their yield.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Favouring liver synthesis by stimulating the activity of digestive enzymes that ensure optimum use of nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fat-soluble vitamins, enhancing its intestinal absorption and, hence, their bioavailability.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Types of hepatoprotective additives commercially available\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Liver protectors act by protecting liver from toxins and stimulating its functions, which leads to improved animal health, growth and production.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are two different types available in the market:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Herbal origin: made up of a combination of a variable number of herbs with different hepatoprotective properties, such as Phyllantus niruri, Azadirachta indica, Andrographis paniculata, Achyrantes aspera, etc.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Donors of methyl groups: based on the methyl groups’ ability to connect to toxins, favouring their elimination from the animal.10 Compounds able to donate methyl groups most notably include certain amino acids and their derivatives (e.g. methionine, carnitine, betaine, etc.), vitamin derivatives (e.g. choline).\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Both can come in liquid or powder form. Liquid liver protectors are added to drinking water and are generally used for healing purposes, as the poultry affected by liver problems normally significantly reduce their feed intake, while that is not the case with liquids. For other situations, when used for preventive purposes, powdered liquid protectors are the most commonly used, as they provide greater yield.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Using a multi-herb blend as a liver protector\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The effectiveness of a blend of four herbs with different hepatoprotective properties was evaluated; Phyllantus niruri, Azadirachta indica, Andrographis paniculata and Achyrantes aspera in 180 Ross roosters from a commercial farm which, at 20 days, were shipped to a specific unit, where they were subjected to different feeding programmes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The 180 animals were divided into 6 repetitions of 3 groups of 10 animals each:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Group A (positive control): these were fed a normal diet.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Group A (negative control): these were fed a normal diet supplemented with 10% oxidised soya oil and 0.5% ferrous sulphate.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Group C: same diet as Group B, but supplemented with 250 g of a multi-herb blend per tonne of feed.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During the recovery phase (days 32 to 42), Groups A and B were fed a normal diet, while Group C was given a normal diet supplemented with 250 g of a multi-herb blend per tonne of feed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The study was conducted during the second growth period, spanning days 20 to 42. The chickens were weighed individually on days 20, 31 and 42, and their mortality was recorded daily. The feed intake and feed conversion ratio were measured on days 31 and 42. Blood tests and autopsies were also conducted (liver weight) on day 42 (Table 1). At the end of the study, blood samples were taken in order to evaluate differences between treatments regarding two serum markers of liver inflammation; Aspartate transaminase (AST) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). For the statistical study, an alpha risk of 5% was chosen.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As shown in the results collected in Table 1, the addition of oxidised soya oil and high levels of ferrous sulphate in feed slightly, though not significantly, lowered growth yield. Supplementing with 250 g of multi-herb blend per tonne of feed significantly improved feed conversion and body weight during the intoxication stage (days 20 to 31), which could indicate that this multi-herb blend allowed the liver to use the oxidised soya oil as a source of energy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Conclusion\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Optimisation in the use of feedstuffs and the increase in productivity are two of the most important aspects in the poultry industry. Loss of sensitivity to the medication\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>Resistance develops when continuous administration or prolonged exposure to the same anticoccidial makes coccidia less sensitive to the medication (Ruff, 1993). One of the pillars of this journey is \u003Cstrong>FAMI-QS certification\u003C\u002Fstrong>, an international code of good practice for special ingredients for animal nutrition.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At Nuproxa Switzerland, \u003Cstrong>FAMI-QS\u003C\u002Fstrong> implementation and certification represents more than technical compliance—it is a clear expression of our \u003Cstrong>commitment to safety, traceability, and regulatory compliance\u003C\u002Fstrong>. And this commitment is being expanded: the Nuproxa Group is conducting a strategic project to implement and certify FAMI-QS in its affiliates in Latin America. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>\u003Cstrong>We already have two duly certified affiliates: Nuproxa Mexico and Nuproxa Chile.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The next affiliate is Nuproxa Colombia, which is working hard to implement a quality system in order to obtain certification.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This move reinforces our \u003Cstrong>role as an integrated and responsible group and positions us as pioneers in the region\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Few companies of Nuproxa&#8217;s size in Latin America have adopted this international standard, which makes this initiative a competitive advantage and a concrete demonstration of our commitment to delivering differentiated products and services with safety and reliability.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>\u003Cstrong>According to global data, only 2% of FAMI-QS certifications are in South America\u003C\u002Fstrong>, while Asia accounts for 55% and Europe 34%. This figure highlights how limited adherence to the international standard still is in the region, \u003Cstrong>reinforcing Nuproxa&#8217;s pioneering\u003C\u002Fstrong> character and the importance
