Certification and Quality: The Key to Excellence at Nuproxa Group
Discover how FAMI-QS certification strengthens Nuproxa’s quality, safety and competitiveness on the global market, boosting customer confidence and opening up new opportunities.
By Ana Paula Barp Brandt, Quality Director at Nuproxa Group
To celebrate the Fourth Quality Week and the tenth anniversary of the Implementation and Certification of Nuproxa Switzerland’s Quality and Safety Management System, nothing is more significant than discussing the importance of certification for the Nuproxa Group.
In our sector, certification is no longer a differentiator, but a must. Being a certified company demonstrates commitment to regulatory compliance, reinforces commitment to the safety and quality of the products marketed by Nuproxa, increases customer confidence and facilitates entry into new markets. In addition, certification, as the basis for the Quality Management System, promotes the reduction of costs with non-conformities and drives continuous improvement.
Among so many certifications, why did Nuproxa choose the FAMI-QS?
FAMI-QS is a voluntary, auditable system aimed at operators who produce or market SpecialtyFeedIngredients, defined as any ingredient added intentionally, which is not normally consumed as feed on its own, whether or not it has nutritional value, but which affects the characteristics of the feed or the performance of the animals.
These ingredients must be produced using one of the following processes:
- Chemical
- Bioprocessing
- Mining
- Extraction
- Mixing
- Formulations and/or preparations
The products must have specific functionalities, be they technological, sensory, nutritional or zootechnical.
Specialty Feed Ingredients
Produced by a process recognised by FAMI-QS
Specific functionality:
technological, sensory,
nutritional, zootechnical
FAMI-QS certification covers the production and/or commercialisation (trading) of ingredients, but does not include complete foods such as feed or any substance or combination of substances intended to treat animal diseases. It is therefore a certification aimed at a specific market segment.
The scope of FAMI-QS includes:
- Good Manufacturing Practices
- HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)
- Continuous improvement
- Risk management
- Operations management
An essential point in Nuproxa Switzerland’s choice of FAMI-QS was its “High Level Structure” (HLS), which shares a common base of texts and definitions with other ISO Management System standards, facilitating the integration of multiple standards, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 22000, into a single system.
As part of the Nuproxa Group’s strategy, Nuproxa Switzerland’s Quality Department has structured itself to certify all affiliates in Latin America. In December 2021, we certified Nuproxa Mexico, and we are currently working with the teams at Nuproxa Colombia and Nuproxa Chile. Nuproxa Colombia is in the process of obtaining its first certification, while Nuproxa Chile is working on integrating its management system already certified to ISO 9001.
Stages of the Certification Process
The certification process includes the following stages:
- Download the FAMI-QS Code and related documents, available in English and Spanish.
- Identify products and suppliers and fill in the application register with the help of Nuproxa Switzerland.
- FAMI-QS assesses the application and, if approved, issues an Approval Letter, which must be presented to the contracted certification body.
- The certification body carries out the initial audit in two stages: evaluation of the management system and verification of implementation.
- After the audit, the certifier submits the documentation to FAMI-QS, which issues the certificate.
- The certificate is registered on the FAMI-QS website.
The certification is valid for three years, with annual follow-up audits, after which a recertification audit is carried out.
After certification, maintaining the system is essential, and this includes activities such as internal audits, critical analysis meetings and recall simulations. The quality system must consider external and internal factors, risks and opportunities, as well as the needs of stakeholders, which directly influence strategic decision-making.
Working with certified companies minimises unsafe practices and the risk of using ingredients that may contain hazards to human or animal health, promoting food safety in the supply chain.
